Hackensack Golf Club is a private 18-hole golf club that was founded in 1899 and was originally located in Hackensack. The Club relocated its current location on the Oradell/Emerson borders in 1929. The course was designed by noted course architect Charles Henry Banks. Banks was a disciple of golf course architect Charles B. MacDonald, and was renowned for his use of earthmoving equipment required to fulfill his designs, particularly the deep traps located around each green. It was from this that he got his now-famous nickname “Steam Shovel.” And so with careful overseeing by the Club’s Historians and consistent care taken in maintaining the grandeur that Banks envisioned, golfers will find this course to be endlessly challenging without feeling overly tricky or deceptive.
