Hunger has many faces.

It shows itself in a parent skipping meals so her children can eat, a child going to bed with an empty stomach, an elderly person choosing to pay rent rather than buy groceries, the mom who at the end of the month encourages her teenage son to go to dinner at his friend’s home so he has a meal, the elderly man going through a dumpster outside a local restaurant and the grandmother raising her grandchildren who regularly adds water to milk to make it stretch a few more days. Each of these individuals lives in our community and has turned to CFA for help. Each of these individuals lives in our community and has turned to CFA for help.

CFA was Lauren’s last resort. Her kids were hungry and she just received an eviction notice. “If it was just for me, I wouldn’t be here,” she said with resolve as tears streamed down her face. To describe her as distraught would be an understatement. Lauren works full-time, plays by the rules, yet still finds herself in the same position as so many of our clients: Working long hours, but not making enough to manage one's basic needs without outside help. There is an unspoken sense of failure and embarrassment.

Your support made it possible for us to help Lauren and her children. Her family now receives monthly emergency food packages and we were able to pay her security deposit on an affordable apartment. Lauren left relieved and grateful

Meet a Few of Our Clients:

  • Jill & Philip have two children. Philip is working, but his hours were cut and they are struggling to make ends meet. They never needed help prior to this year and are trying to navigate the complicated social service system while still looking for work.
  •  Tyron is a single father raising his 6-year-old daughter. He is working but doesn't make enough to pay the bills. He shares custody with the child's mother so that the child will always have one parent able to keep a roof over her head.  CFA helps with food support and paid one utility bill.
  •  Joan is a single mom with 2 children, 7 & 10.  She lost her job, and her unemployment checks do not cover her expenses.  Joan is hopeful that she will find work, but in the meantime needs help putting food on her table.  CFA helps with food support
  •  Richard is a 52 yr old man who has custody of his 14 yr old son.  Richard had been in and out of the hospital due to an illness. CFA paid 2 months worth of utility bills to prevent a shut-off.
  •  Anne is 94 yr old woman who receives Social Security and has a small pension. She recently fell behind in her rent and was facing eviction. CFA paid her first month's rent so that she could move into senior housing. CFA's case manager also helped her with the application to receive Meals on Wheels.
  •  On Monday mornings, Cheryl's seven-year-old daughter Cari typically went to school feeling a little hungry since her mom was not always able to provide, on the weekends, the same nutrition that the Federal free and reduced-price school meal program offered.  CFA helped ease this problem by sending a healthy weekend snack pack home with Cari on Friday afternoons.
